Kevin Alejandro “Golden Boy” on CBS

At the CBS portion of the semi-annual gathering of the Television Critics Association (TCA), currently being held at the Langham Hotel in Pasadena, actor Kevin Alejandro is quick to sum up his role as Detective Christian Arroyo in the upcoming police series, Golden Boy, which will make its season debut on February 26 (10pm). “When he is first introduced, it is easy to believe he is a complete asshole.

“One of the reasons that I was so attracted to the project was because he is such a colorful, sort of, Iago character. It’s a great change from what I’ve been, what I’ve presented so far.  I think playing the bad guy is always a fun thing. I have a great time doing it.”

Born of Mexican heritage in San Antonio, Texas, Alejandro has enjoyed an eclectic range of roles since he broke into the business in 2003, guesting on Crossing Jordon and Vegas. Highlights include series regular stints on another NBC police drama, Southland (Nate Moretta) and HBO’s supernatural thriller, True Blood (Jesus Velazquez). Alejandro also has shown his lighter side, recurring on Ugly Betty in the role of Santos, the father of Betty’s nephew.

Golden Boy, created by Nicholas Wootton, follows the mercurial career of 26-year-old patrolman Walter William Clark, Jr. – portrayed by Theo James – who rises to the position of police commissioner in an unheard of seven years. As demonstrated in the pilot episode, Alejandro’s Detective Arroyo is both resentful and opportunistic in his relationship with Clark.

Alejandro chuckles, “Christian is a complicated guy in a complicated situation. He’s not necessarily just a bad guy.  You’ll see that he’s a great cop, and he will do what it takes to get the job done whether or not he breaks a rule or two. One of the great things about the way this show is written is you really get to know each one of these characters. The audience gets to see how my character thinks and feels. You see what he goes through and why he is the way he is, and hopefully, you’ll feel for him as well.

“Another great aspect of the show is how each character kind of counter balances each other. We all have people in our lives that call out our flaws and keep us accountable.” Aside from Alejandro and James, series regulars include Chi McBride, Bonnie Somerville Holt McCallany and Stella Maeve.

Golden Boy, which is being produced by Warner Bros. Television, will air Tuesday nights on Feb 26 and Mar 5 before moving to a permanent slot of Fridays (10pm), beginning Mar 8
