Los Angeles, CA – According to Deadline, actors Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz (Zoolander 2, Bandidas) are firmed to star in Escobar. The movie is based on a true story of the relationship between the Colombian drug king Pablo Escobar and Mexican TV host Virginia Vallejo, and will be directed by Spanish director Fernando Leon de Aranoa (Princesas, A Perfect Day).
Millennium Films will be selling this film in Cannes this month. Producers for the film are Dean Nichols and Javier Bardem.
Vallejo is an award-winning anchor woman who had a five- year romantic relationship with Escobar. She was granted asylum in the U.S. in 2010 after she testified against Colombian presidents Alfonso Lopez, Ernesto Samper and Alvaro Uribe, whom she denounced as collaborators for the drug cartels.
Bardem, who won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role No Country for old men, can next be seen starring in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales which is due out July 7, 2017. Bardem is also slated to star in Darren Aronofsky untitled feature alongside Jennifer Lawrence.
Cruz and Bardem who are husband and wife and first worked together on the 1992 film Jamon, Jamon directed by Bigas Luna.
