Just so you know. Ivonne Coll is a big deal.
Former Miss Puerto Rico turned actress, Coll was recruited by Francis Ford Coppola himself to play the role of “Yolanda” in his movie The Godfather, Part II. Most recently if you are a fan of Teen Wolf, Switched at Birth or the Hulu online hit East Los High you have been witness to her talent. She is a highly regarded dramatic actress with the awards to prove it. But on Monday, October 13, get ready to see her in the highly buzzed about CW comedy-drama telenovela Jane the Virgin where she plays Jane’s (Gina Rodriguez) stern (but really just an ole softy) good looking grandma Alba.
“It’s Ground breaking, I think, that you get four Latina protagonist, in age ranges from oldest to youngest — all Latinas, in an English-language TV broadcast show”, says Coll.
Catch a glimpse of the dynamics between Abue (grandma) Alba explaining to Jane the virgin (a young version of Rodriguez) about what losing her virginity signifies, while Jane’s “got pregnant too young” mother (Andrea Navedo) looks on.

Based on the telenovela Juana La Virgen, Jane the Virgin follows 23-year-old Jane Villanueva (Rodriguez). When Jane Villanueva was a young girl, her grandmother, Alba, convinced her of two things: telenovelas are the highest form of entertainment, and women must protect their virginity at all costs. Jane is a driven young woman studying to become a teacher, nursing a dream to be a writer, and supporting herself with a job at a hot new Miami hotel. She has a wonderful fiancé — a handsome, hard-working detective named Michael — who loves her enough to accept her detailed timeline for their future together and even her insistence on “saving herself” until they’re married. But Jane’s world is suddenly turned upside down when she goes to see her doctor for a routine check-up and is accidentally artificially inseminated with a specimen meant for the patient in the next room.
