Isabel Allende’s “The House of the Spirits” TV Series In the Works

Casting Crucial – a Latino family must include Latino actors!

Hollywood, CA – Isabel Allende’s critically praised novel “The House of the Spirits,” is in development for a TV series.  The writer to adapt story and the director have yet to be named. FilmNation Entertainment, who acquired rights to the book, serves as studio on the project, and Allende as executive producer.

The series brings to life three generations of the Trueba family who hail from a Latin American country — their triumphs and tragedies. In 1993, the book was adapted as a feature by Danish director Bille August with a star-studded cast, Meryl Streep, Jeremy Irons, Winona Ryder, Glenn Close — all playing Latinos.  Antonio Banderas was the sole Latino cast in this film when it was made over twenty years ago.  Now FilmNation and HULU are planning a new adaptation and will hopefully steer away from the casting mistakes made in the 1993 adaptation.

The casting choices in this new TV production, hopefully will be more diverse and have an all-Latino cast portraying the Trueba family.”

“The House of the Spirits” was Allende’s debut novel in 1982 and it was instantly received with critical acclaim. Since then, the novel has become a worldwide commercial success, printed in over 35 languages with over 70 million copies sold.

FilmNation Entertainment is a leading distributor, financier and producer of independent films. For the past year, they have been building an impressive TV late of high-end properties. Currently, in development with HBO, I know This Much Is True, a limited eight-episode drama series starring and executive produced by Mark Ruffalo.

For Hulu, “The House Of the Spirits,” is the latest high-profile literary adaptation, joining The Handmaid’s Tale, The Looming Tower, Little Fires Everywhere, and Castle Rock.

Allende, a beloved Chilean writer, is known for the “magical realism” infused in her stories. For decades she has been commercially successful, best known for “The House of the Spirits” and for “City of the Beasts,” published in 2002.She is repped by UTA and the Agencia Literaria, Carmen Balcells.
