Multiple Nominees include FX’s The Bridge and Indie Films Sleeping With the Fishes, Cesar Chavez and After School

The 2014 Imagen Award nominations were announced last week and they cast a wide net this year awarding talent and projects in film and television, with a special focus on independent works.  The Imagen awards honor portrayals of Latinos and Latino cultures in television and film. The awards will be presented at a gala black-tie dinner on Friday evening, August 1st, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel International Ballroom.

Multiple Imagen award nominees this year include the FX drama The Bridge with four nominations Best TV Drama, Best Actor for Demian Bichir, and two Best Supporting Actresses Emily Rios and Catalina Sandino Moreno.  Lifetime’s Devious Maids takes all but one of the slots in the Best Actress nominations with all the “maids” Edy Ganam, Dania Ramirez, Roselyn Sanchez, Judy Reyes and Ana Ortiz.  The only other actress nominated in this category was Yvette Gonzalez-Nacer for The Fresh Beat Band on Nickelodeon.

Also of note, freshman HBO drama Looking a comedy-drama television series about a group of gay friends living in San Francisco, garnered a Best Actor Imagen for Raul Castillo for Best Actor and Frankie J. Alvarez for Best Supporting actor.

The independent project nominations also held their own with multiple nominations. In the Best Picture category (of which all were independently produced) Sleeping with the Fishes received five nominations:  Best Picture, Best Director for Nicole Gomez Fisher, Best Actress for Gina Rodriguez and Best Supporting for Pricilla Lopez and Ana Ortiz.  Canana’s Cesar Chavez came in with four nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor for Michael Peña and Best Actress/Supporting for America Ferrera and Rosario Dawson.

The True Form Film and Plus Entertainment indie After School takes home three nominations. Also in the running for Best Picture After School actor (and producer) Mauricio Mendoza and Adrian Moreira-Behrens have both been nominated in the Best Best Actor/Supporting Actor category.

Of Special Note:

Jorge Diaz whose breakout performance in Paramount Pictures’ Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones has been awarded with a Best Actor nomination.

ORA TV, founded by Mexico’s Carlos Slim and Larry King has received its first Imagen nomination.  Their Newsbreaker En Español, which is hosted and produced by Naibe Reynoso, has been nominated for Best Web Series: Reality or Informational.

In the webseries category Encounters Web Series a Angel Flight Media in association with True Form Films has been nominated for a third time.
