“Variedades: The Ballad of Ricardo Flores Magón” is inspired by the Mexican variety shows of 1920 Los Angeles; features performances by Quetzal, Ceci Bastida, Josh Kun, Marisoul Hernandez and The Martínez Del Río Band
Burbank, CA – May 13, 2013 – KCET’s original arts series, Live @ the Ford, continues its second season with an exciting new episode, “Variedades: The Ballad of Ricardo Flores Magón” on Thursday, May 16 at 9 p.m. This program presents a rare opportunity to see top talent from the Los Angeles Chicano music scene on the same stage.
“Variedades: The Ballad of Ricardo Flores Magón” written by author Rubén Martinez, presents this story as the deep roots of the Occupy movement. The performance is inspired by the Mexican variedades shows (variety shows) of 1920 Los Angeles in which Martínez’s grandparents were regular performers.
The theatrical narrative – Richard Flores Magón’s story — is hosted Martínez alongside author and cultural organizer Raquel Gutiérrez, who in turn present the show’s guest performers, including Chicano luminaries and Grammy Award® winners Quetzal, Marisoul Hernandez, Ceci Bastida and more. Featuring a variety of talent, this contemporary piece showcases the current Chicano music in Los Angeles while delving into the rich political history of Chicano culture in Southern California.
Live @ the Ford is proudly funded by the Los Angeles County Arts Commission. This partnership supports KCET’s current initiative to develop local programming that contributes to the cultural and educational enrichment of Southern and Central California.
