Water & Power, Sleeping With the Fishes The House That Jack Built & Avenues Also Screen and the Short Film Program
Miami, FL – Hispanicize 2014 will kick off its Latino film showcase April 1st with a one-of-a-kind film screening reception and red carpet for Cesar Chavez, featuring the family of American Latino civil rights leader, Cesar Chavez. The other films that have been chosen to screen this year at Hispanicize include Richard Montoya’s Water & Power, Nicole Gomez Fisher’s Sleeping With the Fishes; Henry Barrial’s The House That Jack Built & and Aaref Rodriguez’s Avenues will also screen along with a Short Film Program
The Cesar Chavez screen is sponsored by AARP’s Movies for Grownups, myLINGO, and hosted by Regal Cinemas, and will be shown at the Regal Cinemas South Beach Stadium 18, located at: 1120 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, FL.
Cesar Chavez’ granddaughters, Julie Chavez-Rodriguez, White House Office of Public Engagement and Christine Chavez, U.S. Department of Agriculture will attend the program. As part of the program, they will discuss the legacy of their great namesake and how they are leveraging the film and their own talents to build on Cesar Chavez’s footprint in history.
The exclusive film reception is available on a first-come, first-serve basis to Hispanicize 2014 badge holders, members of AARP and the general public.
“Hispanicize is proud to showcase this important film with some of the most influential Latinos in the nation and, most importantly, with the people that meant the most to Cesar Chavez personally: his own family,” said Calixto Chinchilla, Hispanicize film program manager. “This program and film is going to be a cultural treasure of this year’s event.”

Torn between his duties as a husband and father and his commitment to bringing dignity and justice to others, Chavez embraced non-violence as he battled greed and prejudice in his struggle for the rights of farm workers. His triumphant journey is a remarkable testament to the power of one individual’s ability to change the system.

Twin brothers nicknamed “Water” and “Power” find themselves on opposite sides of the law in East Los Angeles. One is a decorated cop, the other a corrupt senator, but both are forced to reconcile their differences when a violence threatens their futures. Based on his own play, director Richard Montoya (a member of Culture Clash) pays homage to the classic film noir with this modern tale of regret, fatality, and betrayal. Narrated by Emilio Rivera (Sons of Anarchy) and co-starring the late Lupe Ontiveras.

With a script written nearly twenty years ago by Joseph Vasquez, who tragically passed away shortly after his 1991 indie hit Hangin’ With the Homeboys. His riveting story about the strength and limitations of family bonds is brought to life with crisp dialogue, sharp direction by Henry Barrial and a dynamic Caribbean-Latino ensemble led by E.J. Bonilla and Melissa Fumero.

Saul Sanchez returns home to the rough Los Angeles neighborhood of Highland Park, also known as The Avenues, after serving a decade-long prison sentence. Guided by a sympathetic parole officer, who discovers his hidden illiteracy, Saul begins writing a letter to his daughter and begins a journey of self-discovery amid pressure from his gangland Avenidas familia. As Saul separates himself from old friends, he mentors a troubled teenage neighbor following an all-too-familiar gang path. Based on a true story, “Avenues” tells a deeply personal story of fatherhood and the isolation felt by former convicts.

Missing Grandma
