Gregory Nava and Jennifer Lopez Team up for NBC’s “California”

Deadline has reported the Jennifer Lopez’ Nuyorican Productions, Sony Pictures TV and Gregory Nava and long time collaborator Barbara Martinez-Jitner will team up to develop a new NBC limited series, the project is entitled California and tracks a fictional Latino family during a time spanning 200 years in California, from Spanish, to Mexican, to American rule.

Martinez-Jitner and Nava who last developed the PBS drama American Family together.  The series now in development is being written by Martinez-Jittner and Nava who will also direct.  The series is a fictional account of characters and events that follow a family across eight generations beginning in the early Californio days of “ranchos” (ranches) and missions, to the present.

Two decades after Gregory Nava stamped Jennifer Lopez’s ticket to stardom with the title role in his Selena biopic, the two are reuniting for an NBC limited series about the history of California from Lopez’ Nuyorican Productions and Sony Pictures TV.

Lopez and Nuyorican TV’s Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas will be producing with Nava and Martinez-Jitner from an idea first pitched by Goldsmith-Thomas. Nuyorican adds California to their slate of TV project, one of which is The Fosters currently on its ___ season and the new 2015/16 pilot Shades of Blue for NBC

The idea for California stems from an idea Lopez’s producing partner Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas initially pitched to Nava

The series reunites Lopez and Nava who originally met when Nava cast Jennifer Lopez in Mi Familia, which then lead to her being cast in her very first lead role in a film, and Lopez’s star making vehicle, Selena in 1997.  The friends last collaborated in the 2006 when Lopez headlined Bordertown.  The are personal friends, with Nava attending the Hollywood Walk of Fame in unveiling of Lopez star in 2013.
