Mexico’s 2011 Best Foreign Film Oscar nominee Miss Bala is in the process of a remake it was announced today by several trade publication. Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin, Deep Water Horizon, tops the list as being courted to play the beauty contest winner who is forced to work for a crime boss after she witnesses a murder. The Mexican film originally written by director Gerard Naranjo and Mauricio Katz is being adapted by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Contrapelo) and will be directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight).
Producing will be Kevin Misher and Pablo Cruz (who also produced the original. Andy Berman as executive producer. Productions companies listed are Canana Films, Misher Films and Sony Pictures Entertainment
The original Miss Bala was submitted by Mexico for consideration in the foreign film category after a successful festival run, receiving widespread critical acclaim and premiering at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival.
