The COOList Hollywood Update
By Bel Hernandez
This coming May we will know if Rob! the ABC Latino themed sitcom starring Rob Schneider, Claudia Bassols, Cheech Marin, Diana Maria Riva, Eugenio Derbez, Lupe Ontiveros, (more Latinos than any other English-language show on primetime TV) will be picked up. We will also know if executive producers Marc Cherry and Eva Longoria’s Devious Maids will be a go…my guess is that it will be. Come on, Marc Cherry and Eva Longoria — how can ABC say no to them with the success of Desperate Housewives and all the money they have made for the alphabet network? The real question is will audiences give the maids, played Judy Reyes, Dani Ramirez, Roselyn Sanchez and Ana Ortiz a chance to show us how they will transcend the “occupation” and make this a show Latinos will not protest as perpetuating stereotypes.
Robert Rodriguez is not neglecting his film career just because he is now the head of the new El Rey Cable Network. He is busy wooing Michelle Williams (who seems to be a no go) and Mel Gibson (who is on board) to star in Machete sequel, Machete Kills. In addition, Rodriguez plans on going right into production after Machete for the Sin City: A Dame to Kill sequel for which he has already enlisted the talents of Rosario Dawson and and Mickey Rourke. Rodriguez does not mess around. When he wants a talent he goes for it. After getting THE ultimate actor Robert de Niro to star in Machete, who can possible say no to him? Well there’s been rumors that he wants Angelina Jolie and although he has not yet spoken to her she might be the one to say no.
And as they say things tend to come in three’s and Rodriguez has his third project all lined up. Last year Rodriguez bought the rights to Frank Frazetta’s Fire and Ice which directed as an animated film by Ralph Bakshi. Rodriguez plans on shooting Machete and then Sin City, and then go straight into shooting Fire and Ice. Its hard enough to shoot one film and here Rodriguez has three all lined up one after another in one year! Only a rebel without a crew (actually he will have three crews) can even attempt it.
The blockbuster films writer/producer team Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Star Trek) have been tapped to rewrite the Amazing Spiderman sequel which is tentively scheduled to begin production in the first quarter of 2013.
