The Get Down stars Jimmy Smits as Francisco “Papa Fuerte” Cruz, a South Bronx political boss who delivers services to his constituents that the city has failed to provide, such as jobs, housing and healthcare. It’s Baz Luhrman’s (Moulin Rouge) highly anticipated musical drama which will debut on Netflix later this year. Here is the first look at the trailer.
After ten years of Luhrmann developing the concept and an outburst last spring when it was looking like the series would leave Latinos out of the equation, with the casting of Smits in a lead role seal the project move forward.
The series is described “a mythic saga of how New York at the brink of bankruptcy gave birth to hip-hop, punk and disco”. At the heart of the hip hop scene at that time was Puerto Rican Richard Colón, best known as Crazy Legs of Rock Steady Crew. The Sony Pictures Television show will have as its background Bronx tenements, the SoHo art scene, CBGB, Studio 54 and the newly built World Trade Center.
First leads cast were Justice Smith, Shemeik Moore, Skylan Brooks and Termaine Browan Jr. , Justice Smith, Shameik Moore, Skylan Brooks and Tremaine Brown Jr. with singer/songwriter Herizen Guardiola the only female lead announced. Zabryana Guevara landed a recurring role as the wife Pastor Ramon Cruz (Giancarlo Esposito) and the mother of Mylene (Guardiola).
