Enrique Herrera’s “Vivir soñando” Where Reality & Fantasy Intertwine

LOS ANGELES –In a style reminiscent of the best books of mystical journeys, Enrique Herrera’s “Vivir soñando” (Spanish edition) is the story of a trip to Mexico, where reality and fantasy are intertwined. The author’s debut book is a magical voyage that reminds us that no matter the distance traveled or years from one’s native land, the yearning to remember it as it once was, is ever present.

In a book review, filmmaker Juan Andrés Bueno says that “Vivir soñando” is a pleasant journey that accurately recreates the present city of Mexico, as well as the cities of Córdoba and Veracruz. In this book, Enrique Herrera compares and contrasts his idyllic memories of the city of his birth with the harsh reality of Mexico today, with all its difficulties.

“Vivir soñando” was born from a pleasure trip to Mexico in 2013. The author accumulated stacks of notes. “I did not keep a systematic journal,” said Herrera, “but during the trip, after meals and/or before going to bed, I used to take notes which later became the contents of the book.”

Enrique Herrera is Mexican by birth and has lived in the United States most of his adult life. His bi-national experience has led him to believe that many immigrants yearn to return to their country of origin by the desire to relive situations and great moments with people who still hold close to their hearts. All this is reflected in Herrera’s literary creation of “Vivir soñando.”

In “Vivir soñando,” the author travels through time and space. That’s where the thoughts and images of a magical realism intertwine in a compelling way—the present is mixed with the past—the remote with the immediate, and the absurd with the farcical. In “Vivir soñando” many characters transmigrate and many objects and thoughts come and go. It is a work in which the detection of migration of souls is left to the reader’s interpretation.

“Vivir soñando” is an enjoyable and captivating reading. It is perfect for anyone who wants to daydream about their country of origin or those who want to escape and take an imaginary trip to the land of their birth.
