Los Angeles, CA – The Weinstein Company announced the U.S release of the biopic Hands of Stone on August 26, starring Edgar Ramirez (The Bourne Ultimatum, Wrath of the Titans, Joy) who will play the Panamanian boxer Roberto Duran, whose 70 wins by knockout place him in an exclusive group of boxers. Robert De Niro will play Duran’s trainer and mentor Ray Arcel.
Hands of Stone follows the life story of popular and talented Panamanian boxer Robert Duran, who rose from poverty of Panama to become one of the best fighters. The nickname of “Hands of Stone” was given to Duran because of the force of his punchings on the boxing ring. After winning 103 of his 119 fights between 1968 and 2002, he retired at the age of 50. His fiercest adversary was Ray Leonard who will be portrayed in the movie by Usher . The film also stars Ellen Barkin, John Turturro and Ruben Blades.
Duran shocked the world when he was pummeled by boxer Ray Leonard and said “no mas which means “no more” in spanish. He quit the ring.
The story focuses on the the relationship between Roberto Duran and Ray Arcel and to the changes they made in the story of the boxing’s golden Era.
Hands of Stone is produced by Jay Weisleder, Carlos Garcia de Paredes, Claudine Jakubowicz and written and directed by Venezuelan native Jonathan Jakubowicz.
