For Venezuelan born Edgar Ramirez The Liberator is not just another acting role it goes much deeper than that. Ramirez plays Simon Bolivar, an iconic Venezuelan hero, considered still to this day in many Latin American counties the “liberator” of the Americas. Ramirez also takes on the role of executive producer on this film.
Ramirez gives an extraordinary performance in the role of Bolivar. The genuine love for his country comes through and manifests itself in the depth he is able to give to this role.
Helmed by Venezuelan director Alberto Arvelo (A House With a View of the Sea) The Liberator was co-written by Timothy J. Sexton (co-writer of Children of Men). With only two hours to tell this epic story of Bolivar, the “liberator” who with his cry of “We will end the reign of Cortez on this land,” was able to rally armies made up of peasants to English and Irish recruits to fight against the Spaniards.
On the personal side of the film, it’s the story of a man whose courage was represented by his love for his country and for the love of his wife, Maria Teresa Bolivar played by Maria Valverde.
With Ramirez having established himself as an international star playing the title role in Carlos in the 2010 French miniseries, his high profile name will surely bring in his fans, while the history buffs will want to see Bolivar’s military exploits, although they will get more of a look at his ascent from aristocrat to the leader of the downtrodden. And the breathtaking cinematography is sure to garner cinematography Xavi Gimenez many fans.
Playing a role of one who liberates his people and with all of the political forces at play throughout this film, I wondered and asked if Ramirez would ever consider a future in politics? With a warm smile, Ramirez explained that, no in the future he would not be going into politics.
This December Ramirez will be starring as the boxer Roberto Duran alongside Al Pacino, Ellen Barkin, and Ruben Blades in Hands of Stone directed by Jonathan Jakubowicz.
Edgar Ramirez The Bourne Ultimatum, Starring Matt Damon and most recently in the horror film, Deliver Us From Evil, starring Eric Bana.
