Los Angeles –– This year Downtown Film Festival Los Angeles (July 10 – 20, 2013) is proud to present the Latino Film Series, featuring films, documentaries, and shorts depicting Latino culture. The festival will screen over 100 films at various venues in downtown Los Angeles. On various days of the festival audiences can watch gritty crime drama “5th Street,” the story of a boxer fighting with inner demons in Counterpunch, and shorts programs South of the Border and Fun Jobs.
Written by and starring Eric Martinez, “5th Street” follows the story of Joe Montoya, a good man who finds himself amongst the gang culture of Los Angeles, and plays out like a modern-day Western. When discussing his reasoning for writing the film, Martinez says his struggle to find great parts for Latino actors fueled his writing and he used help from many including director Alex Meader. The film’s multicultural cast and creative heads helped make the film into an accurate depiction of modern day Los Angeles. Making its world premiere, “5th Street” screens Monday, July 15 at 9:15pm at the Downtown Independent Theater, 251 S. Main St. in downtown Los Angeles 90012.
Based on a true story, Counterpunch follows Emilio, a young Miami boxer from the wrong side of the tracks whose biggest dream is to win the Golden Gloves boxing championship. However, his biggest struggle is with his inner demons and needs help from his crisis counselor, played by actor Danny Trejo. Shot in fifteen days, the film has already garnered lots of positive press and Trejo says he would love to work with director Kenneth Castillo again because of his great work. Counterpunch screens Wednesday, July 17 at 7:00pm at the Downtown Independent Theater. Following the screening will be a reception at 9:30pm at Spring Studios, 1726 N. Spring St in downtown Los Angeles 90012.
