Demian Bichir Writes, Directs Indie “Refugio”

Bichir teams with Alex Garcia and Lucas Akoskin of BN Films

Demian Bichir 2

Ever since his incredible performance as an undocumented immigrant father in A Better Life, Oscar-nominated actor Demian Bichir’s career has been non-stop. We know he’s a superb actor, but how good is he as a screenwriter and helmer? We’ll soon find out as Bichir is set to write and direct on the indie film Refugio. This film is perfect for Bichir… the story of a young dreamer, born in the circus, who embarks on a search to find his long lost true love. An emotional journey from boyhood to manhood, from Mexico to the United States, the film embarks on the elements of hope, redemption and fate.

Alex Garcia and Lucas Akoskin will produce Refugio for their company, BN Films. Bruno Bichir of Escarabajo Productions ( (Crónica de un desayuno) will co-produce. Principal Photography will begin this fall in the U.S. and Mexico.

Garcia and Akoskin, two of Latin America’s most prolific young producers, formed BN Films in 2012, a well-funded international production company based in Santa Monica, CA and Mexico City. Offering a slate of films in all languages, aimed at both the domestic U.S. and international markets, BN Films will self-finance six to twelve films per year, working initially off of a $150-million production fund.  The $150-million is intended to be used over five to six years.

Garcia, a well-known Mexican banker turned film financier and producer (Elite Squad, The Burning Plain, The House of My Father), and Argentinian producer Akoskin (The Doorman, The Second Bakery Attack) also announced the hiring of industry veteran Katrina Wolfe as BN Films’ President of Production.  A longtime casting chief and production executive for Dimension Films, Wolfe will be based in Santa Monica and focus on the development and production of BN’s English-language features.

Bichir next stars in the Paul Feig-directed Fox/Chernin Entertainment comedy The Heat with Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock, and the upcoming FX series The Bridge. He is also part of the ensemble of Open Road’s Machete Kills. He is represented by CAA, Evolution and Gang, Tyre, Ramer & Brown, Inc.
