Demian Bichir Goes Beyond the Frontera in “The Bridge”

The Bridge Stars

By Elia Esparza

Premieres Wednesday, July 10, 2013 on FX at 10PM

Recently I sat upfront and center at the New Generation Latino Conference  (NGLC) in the “The Bridge Sit-Down” Panel where FX President, John Landgraf and the Oscar nominated actor, Demian Bichir were on hand to tell us all about the network’s newest original crime thriller, The Bridge, which premieres on July 10th at 10PM. I learned that the drama is an adaptation of a joint Danish-Swedish television production about detectives from each country investigating the death of a murder victim found on a bridge that marks the border between their two nations.

Bichir told us about his lead role as Marco Ruiz, a homicide investigator for the state of Chihuahua, Mexico, and about the drama’s plot — centers around a body that is dumped on the El Paso-Ciudad Juárez border forcing Ruiz to work with his American counterpart to solve the crime.

With these two countries being together, you can’t blame one for what’s happening to the other. We share the same responsibility” — Demian Bichir

Kudos to FX for knocking it out of the park when they made the decision to make the countries the United States and Mexico and with the border being a primary protagonist… along with casting Bichir who is an Academy Award nominee for his performance in A Better Life. We may be tired of so much violence on TV and an over saturation of current politics floating around about taking away women’s rights. But the reality is the Mexican/U.S. Border is experiencing a real-world epidemic of violence with the murders of at least 370 women in Ciudad Juarez — a serial killing rampage that began in 1993. The Bridge attempts to put the focus on this terrible crisis albeit with storylines “ripped from the headlines.”

The Bridge is a contemporary thriller with a sadistic serial killer and two detectives who have nothing in common as they desperately race against time to stop a killer. The show is sure to attract a lion’s share of Spanish TV viewers because all scenes will contain subtitles… when scenes are in Spanish, English subtitles will be displayed and vice versa with the English scene. American television as we once knew it, has changed. I predict a major hit for the FX network.

Go Beyond The Bridge for a taste of both the beauty and darkness that exist on the “frontera” featured in FX’s newest drama. The puzzle starts with two pieces?Wednesday, July 10 at 10pm only on FX.

The Bridge, starring Demian Bichir and Diane Kruger premieres July 10, 2013 at 10:00 PM ET/PT only on FX. This highly anticipated new series takes place both in El Paso, Texas and Juarez, Mexico, and revolves around realistic topics impacting the U.S./Mexico border.
