In just six short years Dallas born stand up comedienne Cristela Alonzo has achieved what it takes some stand up comics a lifetime. Alonzo has been given an opportunity to create and star in her own comedy series for 20th Century Fox TV. 21 Laps/Adelstein have signed the comedian to a multi-camera comedy TV deal that is inspired by her own life as a hard-working, middle class bi-cultural Latina from Texas and will hopefully air on Fox.
Alonzo moved to Los Angeles in 2005 and in 2006 was hired to write for The Mind of Mencia on Comedy Central. By 2007 she was being featured on Comedy Central’s Live At Gotham. She was a contestant on NBC’s Last Comic Standing, in 2010, which led to appearances in the Scott Montoya Showtime special Legally Brown, a stand-up special featuring a diverse collection of comedians. That year she was also on Gabriel Iglesias Stand up Revolution. She has also made appearances on FX’s Sons of Anarchy.
But before this latest break, the opportunity to create and write her own TV vehicle, Alonzo has been singled out for her work as a writer. She wrote 15 episodes of Mind of Mencia; She has won awards for the short films she has written including Best film at the Boston Comedy Festival for the musical TGIF: The Musical. She also had one of her sketches named Latina.com’s “Five Funniest Sketches Of The Decade.”
The clincher and the big attention getter was her appearance on Conan earlier this year. This would lead to her deal at FOX. Which is currently looking for a writer to co-write the script with Alonzo, who will co-executive produce. Marty Adelstein and Shawn Levevy who head 21 Laps/Adelstein are producing.
Alonzo is epped by WME and managed by Andy Corren & Joe Meloche.
