Cinco de Mayo, La Batalla, the Spanish-language, English subtitled film about the historical battle between the Mexican army of a few thousand and the most powerful army of the time — the French — may change the way you celebrate Cinco de Mayo from here forward!
Cinco de Mayo, La Batalla chronicles the story of Mexico’s Battle of Puebla, which took place May 5th, 1862. It is the most important battle in Mexico’s history. When the unbeatable French army invades Mexico to set up a monarchy, General Ignacio Zaragoza played by Kuno Becker (Goal!, From Prada to Nada), must defend the city of Puebla, commanding a poorly armed and outnumbered troop of about two thousand men against the French army. Meanwhile, two young Mexican lovers manage to find love amidst the chaos of war. Cinco de Mayo chronicles the bravery of a people pushed to the limit, fighting for their nation, their families and their pride.
Director Rafael Lara, (La Milagrosa, Labios Rojos) does a fine job to taking historical facts and weaving an engaging story of courage, hope and patriotisim and shines the light on the the small, proud and mighty army of Mexicans who went up against and beat the French army over 5,000 soldiers. Heading the cast as General Ignacio Zaragosa is Kuno Becker (Goal, From Prada to Nada), AngélicaAragon (Cuna de Lobos, A Walk in the Clouds), William Miller (Salvador), and Liz Gallardo (TV’s Una Maid en Manhattan.)
