Renowned East Los Angeles Chicano Leaders and Highest-Risk Latino Youth Unite to Show Their Stories, Struggles, and Triumphs in a Play Written for the Chicano Legacy Project
Los Angeles, CA — About…Productions theater company announces two related Chicano Legacy Project (CLP) arts education events in East Los Angeles that will feature renowned Chicano leaders, including a play written by highest-risk Latino youth.
About… Productions was founded over 27 years ago, and creates original interdisciplinary theaterworks and educational programs that provoke new perspectives on history, humanity, and culture. The company is dedicated to collaboration to create artistic and community dialogue; and believes in the power of theater to enlighten audiences, celebrate the lives of seniors, and transform highest-risk youth.
On April 9, 2016, the Chicano Legacy Project Encuentro will feature acclaimed film director Jesus Treviño and award-winning journalist Luís Torres (Peabody, Edward R. Murrow, and nine Golden Mike Awards). Treviño and Torres will lead a conversation about their exceptional careers and involvement in the CLP. The afternoon will also include live performance excerpts by professional actors from the developing CLP play, and selected excerpts from Treviño’s distinguished body of work including the documentaries Yo Soy Chicano and La Raza Unida, and episodic television dramas, Resurrection Blvd and New York Undercover. The event is presented in partnership with the Chicano Resource Center at the East L.A. Library.
On April 21 and April 22, 2016, the Chicano Legacy Project will present a Staged Reading of the student-written play. This culminating staged reading event represents the work of the first year of a two-year project that provides highest-risk students in East L.A. the opportunity to create and co-produce a full production premiere.

The Chicano Legacy Project is an intergenerational arts education program produced by About…Productions which works to empower highest-risk Latino youth in East L.A. This theater- based program draws on inspiring Latina/o figures and the rich history of the Chicano Movement of the 1960s and 70s to improve students’ literacy, communication, and collaboration skills and provide them with empowering artistic experiences. The CLP events are co- sponsored by the UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center.
