Cristela-Alonzo2

by Annabella Campos

Headlining this weekend at the Brea Improv is rising standup comedian Cristela Alonzo. Alonzo has appeared on Conan, Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Gabriel Iglesias’ Stand-Up Revolution, Showtime’s Legally Brown, Last Comic Standing and Live at Gotham. 2013 has proven to be her busiest year to date with Alonzo named “One of The 50 Comedians You Should and WILL Know” by New York Magazine’s Vulture.com and being invited to perform at the Bonnaroo Music Festival and the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal.

“I’m still processing a lot of the great things that have happened to me this year. It’s very exciting.” says Alonzo. She also taped The Half Hour, her first half hour special in Boston this past February that premiered on Comedy Central in June. Alonzo has written for Comedy Central, MSNBC.com, won awards (including Best Film at the Boston Comedy Festival) for a musical she wrote (“TGIF: The Musical”) and had one of her sketches named Latina.com‘s “Five Funniest Sketches Of The Decade.” Alonzo also made her acting debut co-starring on FX’s Sons of Anarchy.

Alonzo recently signed a development deal with 20th Century Fox to create a sitcom based around her life that is now being developed at ABC.  The half hour sitcom will be titled Cristela, and it is inspired by Alonzo’s life. Alonzo will co-write the script with writer-producer Kevin Hench. 20th Century Fox TV and Marty Adelstein and Shawn Levy’s studio-based 21 Laps/Adelstein produce, with Alonzo, Hench, Adelstein, Levy and Becky Clements executive producing. “Even though the show is titled Cristela, a lot of people are behind the project. It’s based on my life and I’m grateful to have a very supportive and talented team.” says Alonzo.

Originally from the border town of San Juan in south Texas, Alonzo moved to LA in 2005. Alonzo’s comedy set is hilarious. She combines observational humor, acting, singing, dancing, and overall reminds the crowd how truly funny the world can be. Alonzo is an amazing talent and a true future comedy legend. When interviewing Alonzo she was very upbeat and her smile and laughter were contagious.  “There’s been people in my life that have helped me. My hope is to pay that forward and help the next generation. I realize that one positive action leads to another positive action.” says Alonzo. Upcoming shows at the Brea Improv are Saturday November 16th and Sunday November 17th , then at the Hollywood Improv on Friday December 13th. Alonzo is with WME and Andy Corren Management. Follow Cristela Alonzo on Facebook and Twitter@Cristela9.
