Cargo Entertainment, handling international sales for Anna Paquin‘s Free Ride announced that they have closed a deal with Phase 4 Films, which has picked up all U.S. and Canadian rights to the Shana Betz directed crime thriller.
This 1970s-set tale is based on the real-life story of writer/director Shana Sosin, the youngest of the siblings. After fleeing an abusive relationship, her mom turns to the marijuana trade to support her daughters, ages 15 and 7. “This movie is about a single mother who’s uneducated and doing the best she can, and she’s not your typical drug dealer,” Sosin said. “It’s also my homage to the end of innocence in America as well as a love letter to my sister and my mother.”

Also starring in Free Ride alongside Academy Award winner Anna Paquin are Yvette Yates, Cam Gigandet, Drea De Matteo, Liana Liberato, Ava Acres, Jeff Hephner and Brit Morgan. Yates can be seen as “Gia”, a woman who befriends Christina (Paquin). The film was entirely shot in Sarasota, Florida.
“Cannes is the ultimate celebration of cinema at the international level,” said Yates. “Phase 4 Films has incredible access to theatrical and ancillary distribution channels so this is particularly exciting since millions of people will see Free Ride in a variety of ways. I’m happy to have a role in it!”
Producers are Susan Dynner, Cerise Hallam Larkin, Chris Swinney and Paquin; exec producers are Mark Larkin and Stephen Moyer.
It’s the first film production from Paquin and husband Moyer’s production company, CASM. Phase 4 will release Free Ride later this year in theaters and on demand.
