Not yet eighteen, actor-musician Armand Jovan is looking forward to break-out roles as an actor and as a musician. “I was born in East Los Angeles and I still live there,” he confirms. “I went to school everywhere, but pretty much got homeschooled, and by age five, I was determined to become an actor. My first acting job was a short non-union Spanish language film.”
Youthful Jovan moved rather quickly into mainstream television, appearing on Hawaii Five-O, Parenthood, Shameless, Children’s Hospital and Nickelodeon’s Bell and the Bulldogs, before landing the series regular Brick’s best friend ‘Troy’ on the ABC series, The Middle.
Now Jovan has moved into his role in the upcoming New Line Cinema DC Entertainment feature film, Shazam. “I play a character who is Hispanic, His name is Pedro Pena. He is a shy, quiet kid who has asthma. He is part of a foster family where there are six kids in all. He tends to stay in the background listening in on everything. He doesn’t display much confidence in himself until later on in the film. The film is in post-production right now. It isn’t scheduled to premiere until April 5, 2019.”
Jovan is not just biding his time until the release of Shazam. He has a musical career that is happening right now. “I am dropping my album on September 15, which is also my 18th birthday. I do plan on having a pre-order listening party here in Los Angles on that date. And then closer to the Shazam opening date, I’ll start working on some more music drops.”
Jovan admits his musical career happened almost by accident. “I met a producer who just asked me if I wanted to try it out. I just said, ‘Yeah,’ and I started making music. It was a lot of work but I really enjoyed it. I could express myself out of my own personality rather than other characters. My style transitions from hip-hop to other musical forms, mostly a combination of hip-hop and pop.”
With his new-found work in pop music and the promotional requirements leading up to the premiere of Shazam, Jovan isn’t actively seeking out other acting work, although he is in talks with writers and casting people. “The main focus my life is aimed at the Shazam release,” he admits. “I am just trusting the music and other work opportunities will continue to happen.”
Shazam! is an upcoming American superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. The film is directed by David F. Sandberg, from a screenplay by Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke, starring Zachary Levi and Asher Angel, with Jovan Armand, Mark Strong, Grace Fulton, Jack Dylan Grazer, Ian Chen, Faithe Herman, and Djimon Hounsou as supporting characters.
