Apertura Showcase in association with the American Cinematheque and Top 7 Productions present the World Premiere of the indie film Varsity Punks on February 28th at the Egyptian Theatre. Senior A.J. Montoya (Cody Esquivel) is his high school’s star quarterback until he breaks his hand; to remain in athletics, his only option is cross country. That’s the un-coolest sport on campus, but the runners that A.J. once considered misfits have the potential to win big under the guidance of their coach (Efren Ramirez). Shot in El Monte, California, this teen comedy-sports drama hybrid will resonate with viewers whether they’re former jocks, nerds or something in between.
“I know this movie will connect with many different people. Yes, it’s about the LA area; yes, it’s about the Latino and Asian culture that populates it, but is it also about the universal things that so many of us can relate to,” director Solozano tells us. “Everyone knows what being a teenager is like, and trying to belong. Also, I’m a sucker for sports stories, and so are a lot of others who enjoy those uplifting moments of a team struggling to reach their goals. These are all universal things that anyone can connect to.”
