Los Angeles, CA – Spanish director Pedro Almodovar recently announced he will team up with actors Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz on his next project Dolor y Gloria (Pain and Glory).

Almodovar, who has previously worked with Banderas and Cruz, said that Dolor y Gloria, contrary to his last work Julieta, will be a film with male protagonists and two actresses. The film, which is set to shoot in July will tell the story of a series of meetings, “some physical and others remembered after decades, by a film director in his decline,” the Academy award winner said in a statement.

Banderas will star opposite Asier Etxeandía (Ma Ma), Cruz and vet actress Julieta Serrano (Arde Madrid, Matador).

Dolor y Gloria is set up at El Deseo, the Madrid-based production house created by Almodovar and his brother Agustín.

Banderas recently played 20th century’s most influential and celebrated artist, Pablo Picasso in Season 2 of National Geographic’s Emmy-nominated series Genius. Cruz can be seen in the new Oscar-winning filmmaker Asghar Farhadi´s thriller Everybody Knows, which will mark the only second Spanish-language film to open the 71st Cannes Film Festival, May 8 to 19th.
