Hollywood, CA — Brazilian actress Alice Braga who stars in USA’s Queen of the South, has joined the cast of New Mutants, replacing actress Rosario Dawson, who initially was cast to play the role of Dr. Cecilia Reyes, a medical doctor who has the ability to generate a protective bio-field around herself. The exit of Dawson from the project is unknown.
New Mutants will tell the story of five teens learning to cope with their superpowers who must escape a secret facility where they are being held against their will. Mutants was created by Chris Claremont, Bob McLeod and Bill Sienkiewicz, and was the first X-Men comic spinoff, launched in the early 1980s.
Josh Boone and Knate Lee wrote the script for the project, which intents at taking a horror-thriller approach. Boone is also directing the ‘X-Men’ spinoff. New Mutants is set to shoot in Boston and has a release date of April 13, 2018. Simon Kinberg and Karen Rosenfelt are producing.
Braga has appeared in movies such as I Am Legend, Predators and Elysium and Queen of the South is in the midst of its second season.
