Oscar winning Mexican director, Alejandro González Iñárritu, is a world-class filmmaker who is all about serious and sad stories will now take on a comedy in his effort to lighten the tone and make us laugh. Gonzalez Inarritu is set to direct Birdman, a comedy he co-wrote with Nicolas Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris, and Armando Bo.
The Mexican helmer who brought us the tragedy-filled Amores Perros, 21 Grams and Babel, topped his game with making one of the most heartbreaking films ever in Biutiful, his last film. In Birdman, Gonzalez Inarritu tells the story of an actor in crisis in the days leading up to the opening of a Broadway play. The actor once played an iconic superhero is now battling his ego as he attempts to recover his family, his career, and himself. Birdman’s story takes place in a single location over a span of three days.
Gonzalez Inarritu will produce with Robert Graf and his former agent, John Lesher. Production is set to begin in March 2013.
Can a filmmaker whose signature films sad, dreary make the transition to comedy? The buzz is that some are skeptical. And, will working entirely in English pose a possible insurmountable challenge? We shall see.
