Latin Heat Exclusive:
The film about U.S. Latino football heroes does not exist – yet. But it will now if Al Carlos Hernandez has anything to say about it. And he does.
“I have been hired to write the screenplay for the full feature film, Miracle at Donna based on the documentary with the same name produced by filmmaker Frank Aragon,” Hernandez told Latin Heat exclusively.
Writer/producer/director Aragon (Down for Life, Boyle Heights, My Father’s Love) has dedicated himself to making films about Latino stories. This time around he expands to another community and another era.
Its a story about the town Donna, Texas, where the residents looked beyond the racial taboos of the times as Head Coach Earl Scott and Assistant Coach Bennie La Prade took the Donna High School 17 member football team, consisting of ten Latino players and seven Anglo players, to became football legends in their community and Texas State Champions in 1961.
Hernandez, currently a professor of mass communications at Patten University in Oakland, and Deputy Managing Editor for www.heralddeparis.com, has collaborated as a screenwriter with filmmaker Phillip Rodriguez (Brown in the new Green: George Lopez and the American Dream). Kronengburg Greenlight Productions of Canada optioned their first effort Broken English.
Hernandez now adds The Miracle at Donna to his writing credits and is on a fast track to complete the screenplay by the end of this year with principal photography set to start early summer 2013. Richard Avila, one of the original members of the Donna Redskins Championship team is on board as Associate Producer.
