A Triple Dose of Latina Girl Power

By Luis Reyes

You may not have noticed, but Latino popular culture continues to permeate popular culture in the U.S. (as it always has historically to some degree or another), but the current April covers of three national magazines feature Latinas front and center.  Vogue is graced with Jennifer Lopez, In-Style is adorned with Sofia Vergara and Lucky is favored with Salma Hayek.

What great role models these successful women are for young girls who are growing up to see reflections of themselves on the covers of national magazines. This is not the first time you see Latinas on magazine covers that are not strictly about Latinas. Besides the above mentioned actresses, Eva Longoria, Penelope Cruz, America Ferrera, Rosario Dawson, Zoe Saldana and Eva Mendes among others have recently graced covers of national magazines.

And it is now also translating to other mediums. Jennifer Lopez and Cameron Diaz will be sharing the big screen as they are co-starring in the upcoming theatrical feature film, What to Expect, when you are Expecting which will be released May 18th by Lionsgate Films.

Genesis Rodriguez

Another beautiful Latina on the rise and very much in demand is Genesis Rodriguez, the adult daughter of the famous Venezuelan singer Jose Luis Rodriguez “El Puma.”  The beautiful Miami raised actress made her debut in the film Man on a Ledge, and was the female lead opposite Will Farrell in Casa De Mi Padre. She will be seen in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s new film The Last Stand when it released January 18th of next year.

As for the small screen, it is hoped that Devious Maids, anew pilot for ABC –TV co-executive produced by Marc Cherry (Desperate Housewives) and Eva Longoria, a series based on a Spanish language TV mini-series, starring Judy Reyes, Roselyn Sanchez, Dani Ramirez and Ana Ortiz, is picked up by the network for its fall lineup. The Hollywood scene is sizzling for Latinas!
