Late last night it was announced that Actors Equity, the guild that governs all live stage production has decided that 99 seat theaters in Los Angeles will have to pay their actors a minimum wage of $9. This will go into effect beginning on June 1, 2016.
The decision by the union’s National Council was taken in spite of the fact that local Equity members voted overwhelmingly two to one, to reject the pay increase.
The minimum wage for rehearsals and performances will take effect June 1, 2016, for scores of theater companies that already work under the 99-Seat Theater Plan. For decades that plan has required only token payments for actors when they perform — and nothing when they rehearse.
There are exceptions to the new minimum wage edits are 1) for “Membership Companies” controlled by actors; and 2) for in house production with fewer than 50 seats.
